In our exclusive featurette, written and directed by A Rabbit’s Foot creative director Fatima Khan, Jenner explores her relationship with the self—all the while embracing 1960s Italian glamour.
“Every gaze tells a story, and every photograph becomes someone else’s memory.”
Written and directed by A Rabbit’s Foot creative director Fatima Khan, “La Passeggiata” sees our issue 16 cover star Kendall Jenner transform into a 1960s Italian-inspired superstar, alongside a behind the scenes featurette that explores Jenner’s relationship with voyeurism and the self.
Shot on gorgeous colour and monochrome 16mm film, the two minute editorial film—a companion to our dazzling cover interview with Jenner—features the American supermodel wrestling with the act of seeing and being seen, across a series of cinematic vignettes.
“That tension finds its clearest expression in the film’s closing voiceover, delivered by Jenner herself”, says creative director Fatima Khan, who wrote the treatment for the featurette. “Because movement leaves room for mystery. It is the thesis of the whole editorial in six words. A passeggiata looks like the simplest gesture there is, and yet it is never neutral. Jenner’s stroll through this constructed narrative becomes a meditation on the gap between being looked at and being understood—a gap she has occupied publicly for most of her adult life. The camera follows her the way a city follows anyone it has decided to watch. Jenner keeps walking anyway.”
In an evocative voiceover—written exclusively for the piece—Jenner muses on the surreal, para-social nature of celebrity. “We wanted to encourage and challenge audiences to re-think any preconceived ideas and notions of who Kendall Jenner is,” Khan says. “Both cinema and celebrity are deeply entwined with voyeurism—we wanted to play with the idea of Kendall flipping flip the script on her voyeurs in a unique way.”
Khan emphasised the importance of shooting the editorial short on film rather than digital. “There is still no more intimate or glamorous way to capture an image than on film. We shot ‘Le Passeggiata’ on 16mm colour and monochrome, with additional footage on Super 8, allowing the visuals to take on the fleeting—and therefore precious—quality of a memory.”
