Ever wished that Tilda Swinton would read you a bedtime story before bed? Or felt peckish for a bowl of porridge whipped up by Josh O’Connor himself? Or wondered what Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood would make of your star sign? If so, here’s your chance.
The Cinema For Gaza initiative has announced its inaugural online auction to support the urgent humanitarian work conducted by Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) in Gaza. Going live from 9AM on April 2nd until midnight on April 12th, the auction will give the public the opportunity to bid for a host of gifts donated by the film industry’s finest, including Ramy Youssef, Nia DaCosta, Joseph Quinn, Peter Capaldi, and Luna Carmoon.
Along with the aforementioned bedtime story and porridge tutorial, donations also include tickets to Ramy Youssef’s new comedy show, a cup of tea over Zoom with actor Joseph Quinn, and precious items and memorabilia from iconic auteurs Ken Loach and Mike Leigh, along with a host of other rewards.
Cinema For Gaza organisers, comprised of a diverse group of film professionals including Hannah Flint, Leila Latif, Julia Jackman, Sophia Monks Kauffman and Helen Simmons, said this about the initiative:
“The International Court of Justice indicated in January that there is a plausible risk of genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. As the international community fails to bring the violence to an end, a pressing question persists: Where is the red line, and how many more civilians will be killed before world leaders take decisive action to enforce an immediate and permanent ceasefire? As we enter the sixth month of Israel’s military siege of Gaza, it has never been more vital to raise funds for the urgent humanitarian work conducted by Medical Aid for Palestinians. Their efforts are not only essential but lifesaving, as Israel’s bombardment has obliterated Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure. We believe that art and politics are inextricably linked and are called to act in word and deed to help those subjected to unspeakable horrors across the occupied Palestinian territory. Cinema For Gaza is a passionate, inclusive fundraising space powered by the generosity of people from all corners of the film industry who will not stand idly by while Palestinians are dehumanised and attacked with impunity.”
