The film, art and culture publication celebrated its 14th issue with a special launch at West Hollywood’s Architecture Books.
On a typically sun-drenched Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles, A Rabbit’s Foot celebrated its most ambitious issue yet with an unforgettable evening at West Hollywood’s iconic design and photography bookstore, Architecture Books.
In partnership with Bottega Veneta, the event brought together friends and collaborators of the publication to mark the launch of Issue 14: California—featuring four magnificent variant covers, each capturing the Golden State’s spirit in all its vibrant glory.
The covers feature musician Alana Haim, actor and artist Jeff Bridges, legendary L.A. Rebellion pioneer Charles Burnett in conversation with filmmaker Boots Riley, and writer Ottessa Moshfegh—the latter four dressed head to toe in Bottega Veneta.
Guests included issue 14 cover star Ottessa Moshfegh, producer Oddessa Rae, actresses Jessica Henwick and Lilah Pate, The Bear actor Lionel Boyce, Opus director Mark Anthony Green, musicians Ama Lou and Allissia, and A Rabbit’s Foot editor-in-chief Charles Finch. The launch also saw Jonathan Burnett and filmmaker Chiara Towne pick up copies of the issue, which features both Jonathan’s father—legendary filmmaker and issue 14 cover star Charles Burnett—and Chiara’s—the revered Hollywood screenwriter Robert Towne.
“We’re proud to debut this special California-themed issue in Los Angeles, a city that has felt like our second home since the very beginning,” said A Rabbit’s Foot creative director Fatima Khan, who emphasised the publication’s mission to keep the arts, cinema, music, literature, photography and beyond – at the centre of cultural life. “At a moment when the arts face increasing pressure, it feels more vital than ever to champion print and support the cultural spaces that sustain creativity, from independent cinemas to bookstores. We’re especially grateful to be launching the issue at Architecture Books, one of my favorite new bookstores in Los Angeles. It has a wonderful community culture and an extraordinary selection of rare titles across photography, architecture, cinema and the arts, there’s always something new to discover in the space.”
Lead features writer and head of video content Luke Georgiades discussed the thinking behind the four covers. “We wanted each to represent what we consider the very best of California’s artistic excellence. Over the past few months we’ve been putting together these amazing films, which we’re proud to debut in the Architecture Books archive room during this launch. The heart of what we do is cinema, so to see the videos exhibited next to the printed issue feels really apt to our brand’s ethos.” We asked Georgiades to pick a favourite cover, and he pointed out Burnett and Riley as one he was particularly excited about. “Charles’ legendary status is largely overlooked by the mainstream, but what he and his L.A. Rebellion peers brought to American cinema was crucial then and remains crucial now. It was a joy to help facilitate a conversation between him, Boots, and Black Film Archive founder Maya Cade.”
The private launch was followed by a public opening on Thursday, where A Rabbit’s Foot’s community of dedicated film, art and culture fans in L.A became some of the first in the world to get their hands on the new issue. See below for an exclusive sneak peek of the event.
